What is a hybrid car?

What Is a Hybrid Car?

The natural place to begin is finding out what is a hybrid car? A standard internal combustion engine uses gasoline or diesel fuel to power an engine. When the fuel is burned, the remaining emissions are routed through the internal mechanisms and released through the tailpipe. This process naturally creates a lot of heat and is the reason you need oil to help lubricate the mechanisms.

A hybrid, on the other hand, combines clean electric battery power with an internal combustion engine to help cut emissions and extend your overall MPG. There are a few different combinations of engine and battery, and we’ll go over those as well.

Types of Hybrid Cars

Once you’ve decided on a hybrid car, it’s time to decide what kind of hybrid you want. There are three main versions you can choose from:

  • Hybrid Car: This is the standard hybrid car. It primarily uses internal combustion power with the battery for backup, if needed. Many also have an electric-only mode that will pull power from the battery only.
  • Plug-In Hybrid: This version of the hybrid vehicle relies mainly on the electric battery with a less powerful internal combustion engine, which can be used if the battery begins to run low.
  • Electric Vehicle: This option relies entirely on an electric battery, with no internal combustion at all.

There are also mild hybrid vehicles, which use hybrid technology to help ease MPG, but aren’t full hybrids themselves.

Benefits of a Hybrid Car

Benefits of a hybrid carThe main draw of a hybrid car is that you’ll be spending less time at the pump. Hybrid vehicles balance electric and internal combustion power, so you can stretch each tank even further than even the most efficient internal combustion cars, trucks, or SUVs.

Another draw is that they’re better for the environment. Hybrid vehicles cut emissions because of their mix of electric and internal combustion power. If you need less fuel, less fuel is burned, less emissions are created, and the environment can begin to heal.

You can also check your local and state policies on hybrid and electric vehicles. Many offer incentives for buying a less emission-heavy vehicle, and some states even offer a tax write-off for doing so!
