Ford Escape vs Honda CR-V

When in the market for a compact SUV, many drivers end up looking at both the 2021 Ford Escape and the 2022 Honda CR-V. There’s a reason both models are so popular on the roads of Indianapolis, Plainfield, and Bloomington, IN. However, which one is right for your family?

Learn about the benefits of each in this Ford Escape vs. Honda CR-V comparison from Andy Mohr Automotive

Escape vs CR-V: Performance and Handling

Ford Escape vs Honda CR-V

  • The CR-V has more standard horsepower, but the Escape has more available horsepower.

If you’re looking for an adaptable drive, you’re in luck. Both SUVs offer optional AWD systems in addition to their standard front-wheel drivetrains. Whether you choose the Ford Escape with optional Intelligent AWD or the Honda CR-V with optional Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™, your vehicle will automatically provide the right amount of traction for any given situation.

There are two available engines in the 2022 CR-V. A turbocharged I-4 comes standard, generating 190 horsepower. For a little more efficiency when you hit the gas, you can get a hybrid engine that offers excellent gas mileage.

The 2021 Ford Escape comes with its own standard 1.5L EcoBoost® engine that only generates 181 horsepower. After that, the power ramps up significantly: When you choose the available 2.0L EcoBoost® I-4, you’ll get an impressive 250 horsepower. There’s also an available hybrid and plug-in hybrid engine available with the Escape.

Capability and Efficiency

  • The standard CR-V and Escape are evenly matched for an efficient drive and towing capacity.

Thanks to this more powerful engine option, the Ford Escape can also offer a higher towing capacity. The Honda CR-V can tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped, which is plenty for most drivers. With its standard engine, the Escape can offer the same. However, when properly equipped, the Escape offers a 3,500-pound towing capacity, to assist in getting your sailboat to the lake.

The Escape and CR-V also have similar fuel-economy ratings on their base trim levels. The Honda CR-V earned EPA-estimated 28 city and 34 highway MPG on the 1.5T front-wheel drive models. 1 The base trim level of the Escape offers the exact same fuel economy rating. When you look to the available hybrid options, though, you’ll see some differences.

The hybrid Honda CR-V earns an EPA-estimated 40 city and 35 highway MPG.1 Alternatively, the hybrid Escape can get up to 44 city and 37 highway MPG.

Interior Amenities: CR-V vs Escape

Ford Escape vs Honda CR-V

  • The CR-V has more interior space, but the Escape offers some additional premium features.

No matter which SUV you choose, there’s plenty of space for five adults to comfortably buckle in. A slew of standard and optional features makes the ride more enjoyable for everyone. This includes dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats—all features that are available in both the CR-V and the Escape.

You and your passengers have slightly more room to stretch out in the CR-V, thanks to 105.9 cubic feet of total passenger space. Compare that to the Escape, which provides 104 cubic feet of passenger space. Still, long-legged drivers may prefer the Escape: It offers 42.4 inches of front legroom, compared to 41.3 inches in the CR-V.

Each SUV offers its own comprehensive suite of active safety features. You can get Ford Co-Pilot360™ Technology in the Escape or Honda Sensing® in the CR-V. Both packages offer blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and other high-tech driver-assistive features.

If you’re not a fan of parking, though, you may want to choose the Escape. You can get this SUV with Active Park Assist 2.0, which can take care of steering and instructs you to shift, accelerate, or brake. This feature can help you maneuver in and out of tight parking spaces and isn’t available in the 2022 CR-V.
