Headlight Restoration

What causes your headlights to become foggy? restore headlights

During the manufacturing process of your vehicle, a (UV) coating was applied to your headlight lenses to help protect them from harmful elements.  Over time this UV coating develops a layer of oxidation over the surface (a combination of oil, road grime, and other air-borne contaminants) and is cooked onto the lenses from the heat of the light.

Eventually this build-up on your headlight lenses will damage your UV coating and then the true oxidation or degradation of the headlight lens will begin. It’s important to de-oxidized them in the early stages, so you can get more life out of the lenses. Damage can also happen on the inside of the lens, which is caused by moisture.

Therefore, we recommend getting your lights checked out by a professional to tell you what situation you’re in.

Should I Restore my Headlights On My Own?

Kits have abrasives in them, such as auto paint compounds. These will damage and/or remove the factory UV coating, which is designed to protect the lens from degradation.

Home remedies, such as toothpaste, will work on glass. However, will also damage the UV coating on acrylic plastic and polycarbonate lenses.

Either option, will clear up the fog, but only for a few months. You’ll have to constantly keep doing it for the life of the vehicle. Keep in mind that the companies that produce these consumable products intend for you to have to go back and buy more, hence the refill kits.
At this point, the only way to regain any lasting clarity to your lights is to resurface them the right way. clean headlights
