What is an AWD Car?

Toyota HighlanderWhen you press down on the gas pedal, you generate torque, which is applied to your wheels. Your driveline determines which wheels receive that power. For some, that power goes to either the front or back wheels. For other cars, though, that torque is applied to all four wheels.

The benefit of this system is that it allows for improved traction, especially when driving through snow or rain. AWD cars ensure that you’ll remain stable much more consistently, even if you’re accelerating from a stop in the pouring rain.

AWD vs Rear-Wheel Drive

Toyota RAV4Drivers looking for a sporty ride may be interested in either AWD or rear-wheel drive (RWD). Many sport cars are known for being designed with an RWD driveline, which offers improved cornering because the car receives power from the rear while steering with the front wheels. RWD drivelines are also more lightweight, allowing for a more spirited drive.

The major downside of a RWD car is that it is much more likely to lose traction in poor weather conditions. With AWD cars, on the other hand, you enjoy that added power from the rear for sporty handling while still getting great traction. Having an AWD driveline is an excellent way to enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to sporty handling and a sturdy hold on the road.

Intelligent AWD Systems

Volkswagen AtlasIn some vehicles, drivers may find intelligent AWD systems that work to provide the handling of an AWD car with the efficiency of a two-wheel-drive car. These systems operate as part-time AWD systems that kick in when there’s a need for torque in more than two wheels.

Your vehicle will be able to detect when to apply torque to all four wheels with the help of an advanced computer system. If you’re driving and you hit a patch of snow, the system will detect that loss of traction and activate your AWD to account for that. These systems detect losses of traction so quickly that you shouldn’t even notice any poor handling at all.
